Grothaus nets two as Surge top Muskegon

Cincinnati, OH---Cincinnati State sophomore Kyle Grothaus scored two goals in Saturday's 4-1 victory over Muskegon Community College on Saturday.
 
Playing the team who handed the Surge its only loss of the season, the Surge offense struck first in the 15th minute when freshman Vonne Byrd connected with Liam Doyle, who scored his team leading tenth goal of the season. Byrd picked up another assist, setting up Grothaus for a goal in the 34th minute as the Surge took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
 
Muskegon's Riley Kammeraad scored the Jayhawks' only goal in the 64th, capitalizing on a loose ball infront of goalkeeper Ryan Hall. Grothaus provided a quick answer 45 seconds later, taking a corner kick and bending the ball into the back of the net. David Elwer gave the Surge a 4-1 lead in the 83rd, scoring his first goal of the season off a rebound.
 
As a team, Cincinnati State outshot the Jayhawks 15-5,  improving to 10-1-2 overall.
 
The Surge, which are currently ranked No. 8 in the NJCAA national poll, return to action on Sunday at home against NJCAA Region XII opponent Lake Michigan College. The game will be held at Walnut Hills High School at noon.
