Cincinnati State soccer teams drop season openers to Owens Community College

The Cincinnati State men and women's soccer programs dropped their season openers on the road to Owens Community College on Saturday afternoon.

For the men, who lost to Owens 5-1, this marked the first time the team had lost to Owens in the regular season in over 5 years. It also marked the worst loss the team has taken since the 06' season when they lost to Georgia Perimeter College by a score of 4-9.

Head coach Mike Combs expressed disappointment but said he looks forward to a quick turnaround in tomorrow's home opener against Spartanburg Methodist.

"I thought we played somewhat soft today. This should serve as a wake up call for all of us. Owens simply wanted it more. We have to come out tomorrow and play with intensity and sharpness if we expect to win," Combs said.

The Surge's game against Spartanburg Methodist, a top 15 team in last year's junior college national poll, is scheduled to start at noon and will be held at Xavier University.

On the women's side, the Owens Express seized control early with a goal in the opening minutes and did not look back beating the Surge 5-0.

"We did not come with enough energy to begin the game and looked flat out there. Owens is a quality team. We will learn from this game and move on," head coach Wil Cagle said.

The Lady Surge will play on the road tomorrow at Delta Community College at 1 pm.

A replay of today's men's game will be available to view online at www.bcsnvision.tv on Saturday at 10:30pm and Sunday at 6:30am & 9am.
