Surge defeat Spartanburg Methodist in OT, women's comeback attempt falls short at Delta

The Cincinnati State men's soccer team beat Spartanburg Methodist College(SC) 2-1 in extra time on Sunday afternoon.

Bouncing back from a 5-1 road loss to Owens Community College on Saturday, Head Coach Mike Combs said he was pleased with his team's improvement.

"We came out with a little bit more energy and motivation to play, " Combs said.

Austin Klueh, a defender from Loveland High School, scored the Surge's first goal at 54th minute of the second half to give his team the lead.

Spartanburg Methodist answered with a converted penalty kick by Jose Parker after Klueh committed a penalty in the box.

The teams exchanged chances throughout the conclusion of the 2nd half and the 1st period of extra time. With 3 minutes left in the 2nd period of extra time, freshman Joe Bradley from Scotland broke through the Spartanburg Methodist line and drew a penalty kick. Bradley scored on the kick to give Cincinnati State the victory.

"We got the win against a quality team. We still have things to improve on, but the morale is a lot more positive now than it was after the Owens game," Combs said after the game.

Improving to 1-1 on the season, the Surge will return to action on the road against Parkland Community College next Saturday followed by Sunday's match up against Illinois Central.

The Cincinnati State women's team fell to 0-2 on the season after losing to Delta College 4-3.

Going down 3-0 at half, head coach Wil Cagle inserted Purcell Marian graduate Kelly Luck into net. According to Cagle, the move gave the team a bit more confidence and energy in the second half as Allie Higgins, Brittany Bollmer, and Danielle Galbraith each scored to narrow the gap.

"We came out with way more energy in the second half. I felt we outplayed our opponent. We simply just ran out of time to score that 4th goal," Cagle said after the game.

Next up for the Lady Surge is a road trip to play Kellogg Community College on Saturday, Sept. 8 followed by a game at Muskegon Community College on Sunday Sept. 9.
