Gumbert brothers lead Cincinnati State past Illinois Central College

Logan and Tyler Gumbert led the Cincinnati State men's soccer team to a 4-2 victory over Illinois Central College on Sunday.

The brothers, who graduated from Anderson High School, combined for 3 goals and 2 assists. Logan finished the game with 1 goal and 1 assist. Younger brother Tyler scored 2 goals and recorded 1 assist, including the go ahead goal in the closing moments of the first half.

"They both had excellent matches this weekend against quality opponents. They each do a great job of playing off the other brother's momentum. It is exciting to see both of them playing their best soccer at the same time," Head Coach Mike Combs said.

Sophomore Justin Mitchell, who caught the Illinois Central keeper out of position with a 50 yard strike for Cincinnati State's first goal of the afternoon, weighed in on the victory.

"We are starting to click offensively. Today we showed what type of team we are capable of being," Mitchell said.

Improving to 3-1 on the season, the Surge will attempt to extend their winning streak to four games when they return to action on the road against Ancilla College (MI) on Saturday, Sept. 8.
