LCCC Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader to Start 2022 Season

March 6, 2022 – – The Lorain County Community College baseball team scored 34 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Kent State University's club team Saturday afternoon at Sports Force Parks in Sandusky, Ohio.  LCCC took game one 11-1 and put up 23 runs in game two to win 23-13, both games ending after six innings.

Cody DeVos (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay HS) kept the Kent hitters at bay with 13 strikeouts against two hits and two walks in game one.  After allowing a hit to lead off the game, DeVos retired 10 of the next 11 hitters, eight coming via strikeouts.

Rocky Houston (Grafton, Ohio/Keystone HS) got the scoring started for the Commodores with an inside-the-park-home run in the bottom of the first scoring Nick Werth (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion HS) who walked to start the game, the first of his six appearances on the base paths in both games.  The Commodores added three more runs in the inning to take a 5-0 lead after the first frame.  Houston followed game one with four hits in game two.

LCCC scored five more runs in the fourth inning while sending 12 batters to the plate. The first game ended with Anthony Arkey (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake HS) getting a triple and then advancing home on an error by Kent's shortstop. 

LCCC got in a hole early in game two going down a couple of runs after the first two visiting at bats but responded with a nine-run outburst in the bottom of the second punctuated by Kobie Parker's (Cleveland, Ohio/Villa Angela-St. Joseph HS) two-run blast to right giving the Commodores a 7-6 lead.  

Mason Besserer (Sheffield Village, Ohio/Brookside HS) had three extra base hits in game one and then followed that up with three hits and a walk in game two, scoring twice.

LCCC with travel to the Community College of Allegheny County-Boyce next Sunday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
