OCCAC Announces First Baseball, Softball POTW Awards Of Season

Springfield, Ohio---Jason Swope and Michael Jones of Mercyhurst North East Community College, along with Courtney Cadle and Raquel Ward of Cuyahoga Community College, have won the season's inaugural player and pitcher of the week awards in baseball and softball.

Jason Swope, Mercyhurst North East C.C.

Swope, a freshman third baseman for Mercyhurst North East, went 3-for-6 with three runs, three RBI and two walks out of the leadoff spot for his team in a 23-3 win over Erie Community College last week.

It was his team's lone game of the week, and the fifth game of the season for Mercyhurst North East. Swope is hitting .313 with three RBI and four runs this year. He has at least one hit in three of the five games, while his team is off to a 2-3 start on the season.

Mercyhurst North East will be back in action March 3-4 in a three-game series against Harford Community College.

OCCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Michael Jones, Mercyhurst North East C.C.

While Swope was energizing the team from the leadoff spot against Erie Community College, Jones picked up the win as the starting pitcher.

In his second appearance of the season, and his first start, Jones went the first four innings and allowed just four hits and three walks along with one run, while also striking out four.

Jones is now 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA over 4.1 innings pitched this year for Mercyhurst North East (2-3 overall).

Mercyhurst North East will be back in action March 3-4 in a three-game series against Harford Community College.

OCCAC Softball Player of the Week
Courtney Cadle, Cuyahoga C.C.

Cadle, a freshman right fielder for Cuyahoga Community College, went 1-for-5 with a double last week in a pair of games against Lansing Community College and Mott Community College to open the season.

Cadle was the lone player on her team with an extra base hit during the week.

Cuyahoga (0-2 overall) is back in action March 12-16 against Mercyhurst North East, Madison College, Mesabi Range CTC and Niagara County.

OCCAC Softball Pitcher of the Week
Raquel Ward, Cuyahoga C.C.

Ward, a sophomore pitcher for Cuyahoga Community College, went 0-1 last week despite a strong complete game performance.

Ward allowed just six hits and two walks, along with three runs, while striking out two over seven innings of a 3-2 loss to Lansing Community College.

The performance was her first and only appearance of the season so far.

Cuyahoga (0-2 overall) is back in action March 12-16 against Mercyhurst North East, Madison College, Mesabi Range CTC and Niagara County.
