Starcovic, Shutrump, Barnes, Ward Earn OCCAC Recognition

Springfield, Ohio---Matt Starcovic, John Shutrump, Justine Barnes and Racquel Ward have been voted as the OCCAC player and pitcher of the week recipients in baseball and softball, respectively, for the week of April 10-16.

Starcovic, a sophomore outfielder for Cuyahoga Community College, batted 11-for-24 (.458) with nine runs, six doubles, two home runs, 12 RBI, four walks and one stolen base. He led his team to a 7-0 week that included wins over Mercyhurst North East, Lorain County and Edison.

Starcovic is now batting 49-for-110 (.445) this year with 39 runs, 11 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 39 RBI, 19 walks and five stolen bases. His team is 26-9 overall and 7-1 in OCCAC play, has won nine straight games and will be back in action today against Walsh University's JV team.

Shutrump, a sophomore pitcher for Sinclair Community College, went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA over 6.1 innings in his team's 7-1 win over Lakeland last week. He allowed seven hits and struck out two while walking none.

Shutrump is now 7-1 overall this year with a 2.79 ERA and three complete games. In 48.1 innings, he has struck out 24 while allowing 56 hits and walking eight. His team is 29-8 overall and 10-2 in OCCAC play. They will host Vincennes University this afternoon.

Barnes, a freshman shortstop for Lakeland Community College, batted 15-for-28 (.536) with 14 runs, four doubles, four triples, three home runs, eight RBI, four walks and four stolen bases over eight games. Her team went 6-2 with sweeps of Clark State, Kent State University - Tuscarawas and Grand Rapids. 

Barnes is now batting 31-for-77 (.403) this year with 31 runs, 10 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, 28 RBI, nine walks and 11 stolen bases. Her team is 14-10 overall and 0-4 in OCCAC play and will be back in action Wednesday at Walsh University JV. 

Ward, a sophomore pitcher for Cuyahoga Community College, went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA over two appearances last week that spanned six innings. She struck out 14 batters and allowed one walk and one hit. Her team swept Lorain County in a four-game series by a combined 70-0 score.

Ward is now 12-3 overall with one save this year. She has tossed eight complete games with a 1.24 ERA, and she has 94 strikeouts over 79 innings while allowing 51 hits and 14 walks. Her team is 21-7 overall and 4-0 in OCCAC play. They will be back in action this afternoon at Mercyhurst North East.
