Murry, Whitaker Named OCCAC Players of the Week

Toledo, Ohio---John Murry, a sophomore guard for Owens Community College, and Demy Whitaker, a freshman guard for Owens Community College, have been named the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) Players of the Week in men's and women's basketball for week 2.

Murry has helped lead the Owens men to a 5-0 start, including wins over Wayne County Community College and Muskegon Community College last week. During those two games, Murry averaged 23 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game. 

In the 100-92 win over Wayne County, he had 24 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in 28 minutes. In a 106-97 win over Muskegon, he had 22 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and three steals in 36 minutes. He shot 12-for-30 from the field, 1-for-3 from 3-point range and 21-for-27 from the foul line.

Murry is averaging 16.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and four assists per game.

Whitaker, meanwhile, averaged 15.5 points, two rebounds, four assists, 7.5 steals and 0.5 blocks in last week's wins over Wayne County Community College and Delta College.

On Nov. 12, she had 25 points, 13 steals, two rebounds, four assists and one block in an 89-27 win over Wayne County. She finished 9-for-16 from the field overall and 7-for-10 from 3-point range. Then, in a 104-65 win over Delta College, she had six points on two 3-point field goals, along with two rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Whitaker is averaging 13.3 points, three rebounds, 2.9 assists and three steals per game for Owens (6-1). She is shooting 51.2 percent (22-for-43) from 3-point range.
