Owens Women Picked To Win Conference And District, Cincy Picked Second

The Owens Community College women's basketball team, who lost to Cincinnati State Technical and Community College in last year's district championship game, have been picked by the conference coaches to repeat as regular season conference champions.

In district predictions, coaches also selected Owens to win the district championship despite losing three of its top four scorers in Kamilah Carter (now at IPFW), Eboni Adams (now at University of Northwestern Ohio) and Paige Wright (now at California University of Pennsylvania).

Owens returns five players, led by forward Ashley Tunstall of Huber Heights Wayne High School in Dayton, Ohio. Tunstall earned First Team All-OCCAC honors last year after averaging 11.1 points and nine rebounds per game overall. Also returning are Zhana Randolph (6.5 PPG), Kheri Motley (5.4 PPG), Imani Vickers (3.8 PPG) and LaKayra Carlisle (4.1 PPG).

Cincinnati State, meanwhile, was picked to finish second, but will contend heavily for both championships. They finished second in the regular season last year, but won the district championship and went to nationals.

Much like Owens, Cincinnati State was hit by departures. Leading scorer Phylicia Johnson, who led the league in scoring last year at 24.8 per game in conference play, is now at Eastern Illinois.

The Surge, however, return All-OCCAC post player Emily Fite, who averaged 16.8 points and 9.9 rebounds per game over 25 contests last year. Also returning are Kasia Cicha (4 PPG), Danielle Cheatum (5.9 PPG) and Dawn Johnson (5.1 PPG).

2014-15 OCCAC Coaches Vote

Among the eight conference coaches, six coaches picked Owens to win the regular season championship, while Cincinnati State and Columbus State each got one first place vote. Owens had the lowest average at 1.38, followed by Cincinnati State (1.88), Columbus State (3.38), Sinclair (4.38), Edison (4.75), Lakeland (6.13), Cuyahoga (6.5) and Lorain County (7.63).

Lorain County is new to the conference this year, although they used to be in the league a few years back before leaving.
