Flint, Mich.---The Cincinnati State women's basketball team defeated Mott Community College 58-52 on Saturday for the team's first road victory of the year.

With leading scorer Emily Fite sidelined due to injury, Cincinnati State head coach Sonya Beeler looked for others to contribute offensively. Freshman guard Erick Fitzpatrick would be the player to fill that role, finishing with a team high 13 points. Phylicia Johnson finished with 9 points. Dawn Johnson and Alexus Chinn each contributed with 8 points.

"We struggled with Mott's zone defense throughout the game," Beeler said. "With one of our best players out, I was proud of how the other players stepped up and performed. We also had our best game thus far from the line, which is one of the main reasons why we came out on top."

The Surge converted 28 of 37 free throws, the best shooting performance from the line so far this season.

Improving to 2-1 on the year, Cincinnati State will return to action on the road next weekend against Jackson College on Friday and Wayne County Community College on Saturday.
