Mitchell, Jackson Named OCCAC Players of the Week

Uniqua Mitchell, of Owens Community College, and Thomas Jackson, of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, were named the Ohio Community College Athletic Association (OCCAC) Players of the Week today.

Mitchell, a sophomore guard for the Express women's basketball team, engineered the Express women to two wins this week - including an upset of No. 20 Cincinnati State that put her team in a tie for first place in the OCCAC standings with two games remaining.

In a 98-35 win over Lakeland Community College, Mitchell had 18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in only 19 minutes of action. She shot 6-for-12 from the field and 4-for-6 from 3-point range.

Then, in her team's 82-65 win over Cincinnati State on Saturday, Mitchell added 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. She, once again, shot 6-for-12 from the field, while going 2-for-5 from 3-point range in 27 minutes.

So, in those two games, Mitchell shot 12-for-24 overall from the field and 6-for-11 from 3-point range. She totaled 32 points, 20 rebounds, eight assists, two steals and one block.

It is her first career OCCAC player of the week award.

The Express women are now 21-7 overall and 8-2 in the OCCAC. They will take on Edison Community College on Wednesday before traveling to take on Columbus State Community College in their regular season finale.

Jackson, a sophomore point guard for the Surge men's basketball team, had two outstanding games to also help his team to a 2-0 record in OCCAC play.

In a 90-64 win over Columbus State Community College on Wednesday, the sophomore poured in 16 points while adding 11 assists, five rebounds and three steals. Then, in an upset of Owens Community College on Saturday, he had 18 points, eight assists, four rebounds and three steals.

In those two games, Jackson shot 9-for-17 overall from the field and 14-for-16 from the foul line. He combined for 34 points, 19 assists, nine rebounds, six steals and one block.

The award is Jackson's first this year and second of his career. He also won it Feb. 12 of last season.

The Surge men will host Sinclair Community College on Wednesday before having an off day on Saturday. They are now 18-8 overall and 5-5 in the OCCAC.

Congratulations to both players on their outstanding performances last week! Both players will now be nominated for NJCAA D-II Player of the Week honors. Those winners will be announced on Wednesday.
