Lakeland Men Head North, Grab Two Regional Wins

The nationally-ranked Lakeland Community College men's basketball team improved to 7-3 on the year after picking up a pair of Region 12 victories over St. Clair County Community College and Henry Ford Community College over the weekend.  The Lakers will host Niagara County on Saturday (Dec. 15) at 3:00 p.m. before closing out the fall semester at Lorain County on Tuesday (Dec. 18) night.

PORT HURON, Mich. – Sophmore forward Richard Smith recorded a triple-double and helped the nationally-ranked Lakeland men's basketball team defeat host St. Clair County 89-82 on Friday night.  Smith finished with ten points, 11 rebounds, and ten blocks on the day, tying Steve Hanek's school record for blocks in the process.

Sophomore guards Daishon Robinson and Martell Medley led the way offensively with 19 and 17 points, respectively, while classmates Charles Oliver and Chaz Rollins added 14 apiece.  Lakeland (6-3) shot 58% from the floor and was six of ten from beyond the arc.  

Freshman guard Marcus Fleming chipped in three steals and three assists in the victory.

December 8, 2012  |  Smith Breaks School Record as Lakers Run Past Henry Ford

DEARBORN, Mich. - Richard Smith shattered a school record by denying 15 shots in an 83-63 win over host Henry Ford on Saturday afternoon.  The previous record was held by Steve Hanek, who's ten blocks against Sinclair on January 1, 1991 were the benchmark for over 21 years.  Smith came within a point of his second consecutive triple-double, finishing with nine points to go along with ten rebounds off the bench.

Chaz Rollins added 22 points and 13 rebounds off the bench to lead five players in double figures.  Martell Medley chipped in 17 points including a trio from beyond the arc.  Charles Oliver, who has scored in double figures every game this season, kept the streak alive with 11 while Marcus Fleming and Deran Banton had ten each.  

The nationally-ranked Lakers improve to 7-3 overall with their third straight win.  On Saturday (Dec. 15) Lakeland will look to avenge one of its three losses when they host Niagara County at 3:00 p.m. inside the Athletic & Fitness Center.
