Rasheed Howard and Kamilah Carter have been named the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) Players of the Week.
Howard, a freshman forward for Lakeland Community College, poured in 30 points to help his team nearly upset No. 8 Owens Community College on the road.
Howard finished 11-for-19 from the field for 30 points, nine rebounds, one assist and one block in a 91-86 loss to Owens on Wednesday. He also finished 7-for-9 from the foul line in his team's only game of the week.
Howard is his team's second leading scorer in all games played at 13.8 points per game. In OCCAC play, he is also his team's second leading scorer with 14.2 per game. He adds 4.9 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game in OCCAC play.
Howard and the Lakers are 12-11 overall and 4-4 in OCCAC play. They travel to Cuyahoga Community College for a 7 p.m. matchup on Wednesday.
Carter, meanwhile, led the No. 6 Owens Community College women's basketball team to a pair of wins over Lakeland Community College and Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. She did so while averaging 23 points per game.
Carter, a sophomore guard, opened the week with 24 points, three assists and three steals in her team's 83-38 win over Lakeland Community College. She finished 10-for-15 from the field and 4-for-7 from 3-point range - despite sitting the game's final 11 minutes.
Saturday's 89-82 overtime win over Cincinnati State Technical and Community College is where Carter really won the award, though. After struggling in the first half, Carter scored 10 points in the second half and seven more in overtime. She finished with 22 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
In overtime, the game was tied at 82-all when Carter drove for a lay-up, made it, got fouled and made the free throw for what turned out as the game winning points. On her team's ensuing possession, she made 2-for-2 at the foul line to seal the game.
The award is Carter's third this year and first since Dec. 1. She also won it on Nov. 10.
Carter is the third leading scorer in OCCAC play at 21 points per game. She also averages 3.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and two steals per game in conference play. She ranks in the top 10 in the OCCAC in field goals made, field goal percentage, 3-point field goals made, 3-point field goal percentage, assists per game, points and points per game.
Carter and the Express (21-2, 7-1 OCCAC) will travel to Edison Community College for a 5:30 p.m. matchup on Wednesday.
