Johnson, Murry Earn OCCAC Player of the Week Honors

Phylicia Johnson and John Murry have been named the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) Players of the Week.

Johnson, a freshman guard for No. 14 Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, averaged 34.5 points per contest last week.

She opened the week with 39 points in a 78-76 loss to Edison Community College on Thursday. She added seven rebounds, three steals and one assist. Following that, she had 30 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in her team's 84-49 win over Lakeland Community College on Saturday. She finished 12-for-19 overall, 4-for-6 from 3-point range and 2-for-2 from the foul line in the Lakeland game.

Johnson is averaging 15.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game overall for the Surge. In OCCAC play, she is averaging 25.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, three assists and 2.9 steals per game for the 15-9 (6-2 OCCAC) Surge. She is the conference's leading scorer.

The Surge, who will travel to Columbus State Community College on Wednesday for a crucial OCCAC matchup, now have three OCCAC player of the week recipients this year. Emily Fite won it on Nov. 17, and Hannah Stephenson won it on Dec. 15.

Murry, meanwhile, picked up his second straight OCCAC player of the week award after scoring 28 points to lead the No. 13 Owens Community College men's basketball team past No. 17 Sinclair Community College 116-92 on Saturday.

Murry, a freshman guard, had 28 points on 13-for-20 shooting and added five rebounds, three assists and two steals as the Express moved to 19-4 overall and 6-0 in OCCAC play. His effort also helped the Express win their seventh straight game.

The award marks the fourth straight week an Owens player has captured the award. Bikramjit Gill earned the honor the first two weeks, although the second week was a split player of the week award with Winston Grays of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.

For the season, Murry is averaging a team-high 16.4 points per game, as well as 4.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game. In OCCAC play, Murry is the conference's second leading scorer at 21.7 points per game. He also averages five rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

Murry and the Express will host Lakeland Community College in a crucial OCCAC matchup on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
