SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Three conference institutions are represented in this week’s OCCAC Basketball Player of the Week recognitions. Clair Schmitmeyer of Edison State and Lakeland’s Aaron Pate were named the D-II players of the week on Monday (Jan. 8) while Destiny Wooten and Mario Young from Columbus State earned the D-III nod.

Edison State Community College
Freshman forward
Edison State extended its unblemished season record to 15-0 by dismantling Ohio State-Mansfield, 100-42, on the strength of a Schmitmeyer double-double. The freshman forward tallied 16 points and a dozen rebounds, including eight boards on the offensive glass, to go along with six steals and three assists.
Schmitmeyer becomes the first Charger to earn the OCCAC weekly honor since Riley Culver did so just over a month ago on Dec. 11, 2017.
DESTINY WOOTEN
Columbus State Community College
Sophomore guard
Wooten swiped six steals in the Cougars lone contest of the week. She also registered a team-high 22 points and added four rebounds and two assists to her stat line.
Wooten is now a two-time honoree this season, also earning the distinction on Dec. 4, 2017.
AARON PATE
Lakeland Community College
Freshman small forward
Pate scored 21 points on 9-of-13 (69%) shooting in a tightly-contested game with Niagara County. He also contributed eight rebounds, two assists and a steal in 35 minutes of action.
Pate is the first Lakeland men’s basketball player to grab this award since Mike Davis did so on Jan. 25, 2015.

Sophomore forward
Young poured in 32 points, knocking down 14-of-26 shots (54%), to secure his fourth career OCCAC Player of the Week laurel (12/18/16; 1/1/17; 1/29/17). He chipped in six rebounds, three steals, an assist and a block as well.
