OCCAC Announces Top Players for Jan. 27-Feb. 2

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Four student-athletes rose to the top last week (Jan. 27-Feb. 2) and have been voted as the OCCAC Basketball Players of the Week. Rayonna Peterson (Lakeland) and Tyrek Battle-Holley (Cuyahoga) drew the D-II honors to northeast Ohio while across the state Owens’ Shyah Wheeler and Jacob Cousino hauled in D-III accolades.

RAYONNA PETERSON
Lakeland Community College | D-II Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
Peterson averaged a double-double, putting up 24.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per game as the Lakers went 2-0 and seized sole possession of first place in the league standings. She was a force in the paint as well, blocking 11 shots in 77 minutes of action. Peterson opened the week by hitting 15-of-19 shots for 31 points in an 85-64 win over Owens before coming back with 18 more points in handing Edison State its first conference loss of the season.

TYREK BATTLE-HOLLEY
Cuyahoga Community College | D-II Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
Battle-Holley led a stout defensive effort from the Triceratops, limiting Terra State and Clark State to a combined 99 points in two Cuyahoga wins. He was effective in all areas, putting up per game averages of 12.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 4.0 steals while committing just a pair of turnovers in 74 minutes.

SHYAH WHEELER
Owens Community College | D-III Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
Wheeler did everything last week, recording per game averages of 29.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals, 2.0 assists and 2.0 blocks. She earns her second weekly award this season and third of her career. Wheeler made double-digit shots both games and came up one rebound shy of registering back-to-back double-doubles.

JACOB COUSINO
Owens Community College | D-III Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
Cousino went wild at Lakeland, knocking down all 16 shots taken (12 field goals and four free throws) en route to 28 points. He added a dozen rebounds as well for the double-double. In two games, Cousino averaged 17.0 points on 88% (15-17) shooting and 9.0 rebounds.
