Charger Basketball Sweeps Opening Awards

Edison State’s Allison Hughes and Caleb Iheukwu got off to hot starts this season, each earning OCCAC Basketball Player of the Week honors for the opening week.

Hughes averaged 16.0 points and 16.3 rebounds in three games, including two Charger victories. In Edison State’s tight defeat to Southwestern Michigan, the freshman forward hauled in an astounding 25 rebounds to go along with 21 points. She came up a lone rebound shy versus Beaver County of recording three consecutive double-doubles. Of her 49 rebounds, 30 were on the offensive glass.

Iheukwu registered per-game clips of 24.7 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.0 blocks, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals. He converted 23 made field goals, including six from beyond the arc, and got to the line for 27 free throws (making 22). Iheukwu made no less than seven field goals in all three contests while posting a pair of double-doubles.
