Spring Sport Athletes of the Week Picked for April 2-8

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The weekly honorees for April 2-8 consists of three Cuyahoga Challengers and a member of the Sinclair Tartan Pride. Cuyahoga’s Chase Carney and Kaitlyn Boykin have been named the Position Players of the Week while fellow Challenger, Brock Begue, represents baseball’s Pitcher of the Week and Alexis Strother of Sinclair earns her second Pitcher of the Week accolade from the softball circle.

Baseball Position Player of the Week

Carney slugged five extra-base hits (three triples and two doubles) while batting .538 (7-13) for the week as Cuyahoga posted a 6-0 mark. He totaled seven RBI and six runs scored while playing in five of six contests. Carney was a factor throughout the week, recording at least one hit in all five. He also both scored and drove in a run in four of five games. Carney’s plate patience was rewarded as well, drawing three walks.

Softball Position Player of the Week

Boykin went 7-of-8 (.778) in the batter’s box in two road conference wins at Edison State. She started the week by going 5-for-5 and pushing in five RBI during a 16-5 victory. Boykin then came back in Game Two of the doubleheader with two more RBI and two runs scored.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Begue made two starts spanning 9.0 innings, earning the win in both. He racked up a whopping 16 strikeouts while scattering six hits and a walk in allowing a lone earned run (two total runs).

Softball Pitcher of the Week

Strother hurled a five-inning complete game as the Challengers run-ruled Lakeland, 8-0. The only baserunner of the game reached on an error while Strother struck out 12 of 15 batters faced in the no-hit effort. She was named the OCCAC Softball Pitcher of the Week earlier this season on March 12 as well.
